My Favorite Shorts

Here in Texas we it seems lately we have at least a day or two each week getting into the 80s so it’s time to break out those shorts. I will be honest though after having 2 kids and not working out probably as much as I should it can be intimating putting my legs out there for the world to see. Today I have broken down my favorite styles of shorts and why they work for this 5’5 10/12 mama with short legs and thick thighs! It help you see the differences in the shorts I wore the same grey Madewell tank in each photo I love these tanks because they are light and fit well for a classic look with any short.

Denim Short

Fit Tips: size down if in-between, 10

This was tough because I have a pair of distressed denim from American Eagle that I really love but over the past few weeks when I want to wear denim I have been reaching for these over and over again. These have a good mid rise (9″) and 4″ inseam, on me this is pretty much the perfect combo. They are not too short but also not too long to overwhelm my shorter legs. These have a touch of stretch but they should feel a bit tight when you put them on because they will loosen up as you wear them. They don’t stretch out after a day of running around and don’t ride up on the thighs either. I grab these at Nordstrom for under $60 and if you are looking for a darker wash try these and this style has a higher rise (10.5″) with button fly.

Every Day Short

Vineyard Vines Every Day Short

Fit Tips: Runs tts, I sized up in the white seen here but all the rest of my shorts are a 10

I call these my every day shorts because when you are looking for that classic “khaki” style short this is it! I have tried sooo many styles and brands over the years and when I found these last summer I knew I had hit the holy grail of shorts. The funny part was I then found out that a lot of my friends loved these as well. One of the reasons this makes the best list because they have some great colors and prints, I love the pink, teal and palm print. Here is the best part, many of you have asked for inseams longer than 4″ and although I don’t feel the most comfortable in longer shorts I love that these are available in 3.5″, 5″ and 9″ inseams perfect for everyone!

Scallop Edge Short

Scallop Edge shorts for curvy moms- J Crew Factory #linenshorts #preppyshorts

J.Crew Factory Scallop Edge Short

Fit Tips: I always size up in J.Crew, 12

Man I love a good scallop (the edging and the sea kind) but this year it seems like it’s popping up on shorts all over the place. I feel like it makes them fancier, if that’s possible for shorts. I like this style I got from LOFT for white but the pair from J.Crew factory that I’m wearing won the top slot due to the price and color selection. These are a linen/ cotton blend so they have a bit more texture than the LOFT kind that are a higher cotton fabric. These don’t have very much stretch so if you are in-between sizes I would definitely size up.

Loose Fit Short

Best loose fit, camp style short- Aerie these are great for the tie waist accent and paperboy style waistband.

Aerie Camp Short

Fit Tips: I wanted these to be a looser fit short so I sized up to a L

I was so surprised on how comfortable these camp shorts were when I slipped them on. These are a bit shorter with a 3.5″ inseam but because they are loose and flowy I don’t feel like they are too short. The green you see here goes with a ton but they also come in a ton of other colors including pink camo! I have tried on so many other “paper bag” style waistbands with most of them being too high rise and looking stupid, these are great because they are not too high and not too see through. Overall my look cute yet feel like I’m lounging shorts.

Sport Short

Best sport short Lululemon Tracker V

Fit Tips: These do have a liner and a thick elastic waistband, tts 10

A little bonus for you all, I figured if I was going to talk about all my favorite shorts I had to go ahead and add in my favorite sport short. Last year I literally went to Lululemon and tried on every style of shorts it was like goldilocks these are too short, these are too tight, these make me look fat and these are just right! When I found the Tracker V style with a 4″ inseam, looser thigh area and thick not cutting into my belly elastic waistband I was hooked. Let’s just say I have a few colors now and I’m always on the hunt for prints on sale.
