Now that we’re halfway through October I found that I’m starting to entertain more and more. Whether it’s heading over to friends houses after school or preparing for family to come in for the holidays it seems like our social calendar has been filling up.
Since both of my parents live out of town they fly in for the holidays and I feel like every time they’re starving when they arrive to our house. In DFW it’s about a 50/50 chance that flights will arrive on time so this year I’m doing easy food that can be pulled out as soon as they land… food boards!
I got the inspiration when I found this gorgeous new book called Beautiful Boards by Maegan Brown. She has chapter after chapter of beautifully themed food boards. After flipping through this inspirational book I got even more excited to put together these beautiful looking snacks on a more regular basis.
One of the nice things about the book is that it shows about how many each board will serve so ensuring that I have several sized board was my first step. For most of our after school snacks or entertaining just a few friends this realize the first step is having a couple of good size boards in my pantry to use. Then finding a couple bowls of different sizes really helps separate out some of those round foods, the wood bowls I have I grabbed from the Magnolia Hearth & Hand line at Target. **updated this line is sold out but you can get the similar small bowls from the Threshold line.
Then I always like to have some beautiful cheese knives available just in case I have some hard cheeses on the board. Now that I have the boards, bowls and knives it’s time for food! If you are anything like me then sometimes getting something like this together is a last minute thought but we tend to keep a good amount of food board items on hand (because I pack my daughter’s lunch daily) so I start with what in the fridge.
Luckily I love prosciutto and my daughter loves salami so we typically have both of those on hand on a pretty regular basis. We’re also a house of olive lovers so if it’s green or just regular old black olives they are always going on the board.
If I’m making a board for the kids after school snack many times I’ll just cut up a string cheese or use some of the mini mozzarella balls that we get from Costco. If I’m making the board for adults I always like to throw in some parmesan cubes (mostly because I love them too!)
Then I start to fill in with the fruits and veggies. We normally have cut up cucumbers, grapes, apples and snap peas ready to go in the refrigerator. Finally I like to throw in something a little bit sweet. Recently my friends at Brach’s sent me the most amazing double dipped hazelnuts and not only I go crazy for these yummy chocolates but so did my kids!
