Fall Workwear Capsule: 18 items for under $315

Last year I did an 11 piece work capsule from Target but it was more business professional looks. When I asked you all if I should do it again it was a huge YES!! Although I got a lot of feedback that you needed more business casual looks. This year I decided to add more color and add a few jewelry pieces in the mix.

When I put together this capsule I wanted items that could work now in the heat and into cooler morning weather. In Texas our fall is typically still pretty warm so a lighter cardigan is all I tend to wear until about late October so I went with those options versus searching out jackets.

DETAILS TO NOTE

In the pictures you will notice I am wearing the Sam Edelman in nude leather pumps, unfortunately I was not able to get the Target brand ones in fast enough in my size so these had to be a stand-in, although I have them in another color so able to be accurate on sizing.

New Arrivals: the brown cardigan and the resin hoop earrings I found in my local store and have not yet loaded online. I have linked similar color and style for the time being but will update when available.

The other item not pictured is the printed necklace, this is a leopard print necklace that I found as a shorter necklace to go with many of the outfits. I again did not get that in quick enough so I subbed in an older Kendra Scott necklace. I feel that with capsule wardrobes you should look at what you have in your closet then grab a few new items to fill in for current color and style.

Also the skirt pictured is a stretchy Ponte fabric (left) but after pictures I got in the twill pencil skirt (right) and totally preferred that one, one of the reasons is that the back zipper is just more professional and the fabric is more of a suit skirt.

I ordered these printed mules because I wanted another shoe option but when I got them in and started mixing them with outfits I didn’t love them. I’m not super big into flats at work but I know a lot of you are so I tried to bring a 2nd flat option. If I were to do it again I think I would either order a 2nd pair of the loafers in tan or the mules in taupe.

SIZING

Let’s also talk sizing, I’m 5’5 and typically wear a size M/10 top, I’m a 36DD so I do have to worry about items being tighter across the chest or too low cut. In Target bottoms I typically size up to a 12 and it’s been correct, although in other brands I wear a 10.

Here is how each item fit:

OUTFITS

Fall 2019 Target Business Casual Capsule Wardrobe: 18 pieces for under $315

Outfit #1: Flutter Short Sleeve Crewneck Sandwash T-Shirt | Black Mid-Rise Jeggings |A New Day Cardigan in Brown | Leopard print Pointy Toe Loafers | Women’s Chain Tassel Necklace

Outfit #2: Flutter Short Sleeve Crewneck Sandwash T-Shirt | Ponte Pencil Skirt (prefer this one) | Similar Nude Pointed Toe Pumps | Printed Necklace |Fishhook Hoop Earrings

Outfit #3: Flutter Short Sleeve Crewneck Sandwash T-Shirt | Long Sleeve Open Cardigan Sweater in Oatmeal |High-Rise Skinny Ankle Pants | Fishhook Hoop Earrings | Women’s Chain Tassel Necklace

Let’s start with this green flutter sleeve tee, it is super soft and thicker and nicer looking than a typical tee and more like a blouse. I love the longer short sleeve even wearing it on it’s own. This top comes in 3 colors (blush, olive & black)

The long tassel necklace you see with two of the looks I love because it is almost a dupe for more expensive Kendra Scott long tassel necklaces for a fraction the price.

Chic Jean Friday Capsule Mix Up:

I mixed in the flutter sleeve tee and jeggings but paired them with my J.Crew Sophie cardigan and Sam Edelman leopard pumps for a polished business professional/ Jean Friday kind of look.

Outfit #4: Sleeveless V-Neck Woven Tunic | High-Rise Skinny Ankle Pants | Long Sleeve Open Cardigan Sweater in Oatmeal | Similar Nude Pointed Toe Pumps| Leopard Print Calf Hair Belt | Fishhook Hoop Earrings

Outfit #5: Sleeveless V-Neck Woven Tunic | Black Mid-Rise Jeggings | Leopard print Pointy Toe Loafers | Scarf | SUGARFIX Classic Resin Hoop Earrings

Outfit #6: Sleeveless V-Neck Woven Tunic | Ponte Pencil Skirt (prefer this one) | Leopard Print Calf Hair Belt | Similar Nude Pointed Toe Pumps | Leopard Print Calf Hair Belt | SUGARFIX Classic Resin Hoop Earrings

This tunic length blouse has a very light woven pattern and it very light weight. I noticed when I tried it on that it is pretty low cut so if you have a job where you are moving around or bending over (hello teachers) I would definitely put a cami under it.

Since it is so lightweight it’s a great transitional piece that will work in hot weather but can be an under layer as it gets colder. I honestly didn’t love the color of the printed mules with the top so I decided to show you a few more shoe options that I love.

Shoe Capsule Mix Up:

I loved this look with the longer tunic and cardigan but thought there are more fun shoes than JUST pumps and to be honest the printed mules are not the same color tone as the sweater. I grabbed my Steve Madden studded loafers and Target block heel pumps (in taupe) and LOVED how both of these could also work with this outfit.

Outfit #9: Leopard Print Top | A New Day Cardigan in Brown | Black Mid-Rise Jeggings |Leopard print Pointy Toe Loafers | Scarf | SUGARFIX Classic Resin Hoop Earrings

As I mentioned in the fit section I’m in a 2XL top with the back tightened so keep in mind my correct size of a L would be a bit shorter and tighter. Of all the leopard tops I’ve found this season this one is by far the best for the price. It has a silky blouse feel and a great nude/ camel color that goes great with browns, blacks and color.

Since again I wasn’t the biggest fan of the mules I had to show that this top looks so good with the ankle pants and some block heeled pumps for an early fall look.

Early Fall it’s SO HOT capsule mix up:

Outfit #12: Rolled Cuff Sleeveless Crewneck Blouse | Black Mid-Rise Jeggings | Brown Cardigan | Leopard print Pointy Toe Loafers | Similar Printed Necklace

I wasn’t sure I was originally going to use this blouse but out of all the tops I got in this one was just really nice feeling, had great details and I loved that it comes in this cream & black print as well as a block print with light pink. It flows away from the body just enough while untucked but also looks gorgeous tucked in. The WOW factor though are the buttons down the back and tab at the shoulder.

Since this blouse felt the most professional of them all (the leopard was close 2nd) I thought it would be great to mix it up with a blazer and some heels to show a professional look.

Yes! This is great! I would definitely vote YES for doing this every season! My vote would also be for more business professional as EVERY blogger posts casual outfits, but us working mamas need work clothing guidance, too! Thank you for this! Off to add these to my bag!

I haven’t worked in two years. I have a couple of job interviews and now looking at my work wardrobe it looks outdated.

Thanks to your post I’m going shopping today so I can feel confident in today’s fashion and not break the bank. Thanks a lot!

I just found your website and am SO EXCITED! I got a new job a few months ago and always feel under dressed, but when it comes to shopping, I feel completely overwhelmed. I would buy this entire capsule except most of the items are sold out – Does Target restock, or do I just have to wait until next season and pray you do another capsule wardrobe? I signed up for the newsletter so I’ll be ready next time. Thanks!

Great capsule, but so many things have been completely removed from the Target inventory.

I definitely vote for having more business looks. We have a “business casual” office but I certainly couldn’t get away with wearing long comfy cardigans or jeans/jeggings as that would be considered far too casual. There has to be a good middle ground somewhere…

This was super helpful, even if just for inspiration. I haven’t had an office job in 10 years, is it still expected to wear pantyhose with a pencil skirt and heels?
