Hair Tutorial : Beachy Waves that Last for Days

After two years blogging still the number one question I get is “How do you do your hair!?” Funny enough I really don’t spend a ton of time on it on a daily basis, I firmly stand by the only wash your hair every couple of days rule.

Yes, you heard me right I only wash my hair every 4-5 days so I’ve figured out a few tricks to make my waves last as long as possible. Today I’m going to share with you my tricks to beachy waves that last!

STEP 1: WASH & DRY

First is washing your hair with the RIGHT shampoo and conditioner. Now there are a ton of smoothing and defrizz products out there for thick hair and I’ve found that ALL of them contribute to losing my waves after day one. I try and use products that make my hair feel soft and manageable but not weighed down. Then, I dry my hair as much as I can with a microfiber hair turban, these are great for me and my daughter with longer hair.

Recently I switched to the Ouai Shampoo and Conditioner for thick hair and I love it. It makes my hair detangled, smooth and silky without losing some of the texture I need to keep my lasting curls. Since I do have pretty thick and corse hair this is the right formulation for me but I like that they have fine and medium formulations as well.

STEP 2: PREP & DRY

Kendra | Drybar Sparkling Soda Shine Mist | Bedhead Masterpiece Shine Hairspray

Then I prep my hair for heat with the Kenra Blow Dry Spray and I love the scent and it really helps with shine and cutting down on drying time. I use about 4-5 sprays but not too much bc this can make hair a little greasy feeling if you do too much.

Next I start on drying. If you have heard rave reviews about the Dyson hairdryer then meet her cooler big sister the Dyson Airwrap. The Airwrap has the same technology of using less heat and faster drying time as the hairdryer BUT this magic wand comes with tons of attachments to then also style your hair! The three I use the most are the drying attachment, round brush and larger curling barrels.

When I am drying my hair I start off with the hair dry attachment and try and get my hair about 80%- 90% dry. Then I come in with the round brush attachment and get the areas around my face and at the roots of my hair that tend to frizz.

Next I section my hair into 3rds and use the larger curling attachments to finish drying and curl. Yes you heard that RIGHT the Airwrap shoots hot hair through the barrel (the pink area next to the grey) that wraps your hair curling it and drying it at the same time! Now I know what you’re going to ask… why curl your hair twice?

If you have even been to a blow out salon you might notice that as they round brush they also curl your hair, that’s because building in the curl as it’s drying helps that multiple day staying POWER!

At this point once my hair has been dried and curled with the Dyson Airwrap I will spray lightly with the Drybar Sparkling Soda Shine Mist. This helps reduce any frizz and smooth out my curls. Now for day one I typically will stop here add some Bedhead Masterpiece Shine Hairspray and go on with my day.

STEP 3: NEXT DAY(s) TOUCH UP

Each night to maintain my curls I will wear my hair in a loose bun at night secured with a soft hair tie like these. Although I was looking through the Nordstrom Anniversary sale and Ive been very interested in trying the Slip hair ties and they have a set of thick and thin ones on sale that I’m looking to pick up.

Then I grab my GHD curling iron to add a few of those waves back into my hair for day 2-5 curls.

I want to mention that yes if I’m pushing days 4 &5 I will need some dry shampoo and I love the Detox Dry Shampoo for Brunettes because it gives me that lift and covers my grey roots! When I spray it in I use the Airwrap round brush to brush it through and get into the roots.

STEP 4: CURL

Makeup Organizer | GHD Curve® Classic 1 1/4-Inch Curl Iron

This GHD Curve® Classic 1 1/4-Inch Curl Iron is my secret weapon, I swear if you grab 1 thing from this post GET THIS! During the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale they have it for $133 (reg $199) which is the cheapest I’ve seen it in 2 years. The GHD curling iron does not have heat settings it features ultra-zone technology that maintains the correct styling temperature of 365°F throughout your curling. It saves me time because I am never waiting for it to “heat back up” in-between sections.

I go around my head starting about 2 in down the hair section, curling hold for about 5 seconds and releasing.

I spray again with Bedhead Masterpiece Shine Hairspray and I’m off! I hope this helps answers some of the hair questions that I have received.

Now speaking though of beauty items I did want to throw in here a few more picks from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale if you are picking up the GHD curling iron it’s a great time to also grab some beauty items.

The bedding is really nice! Where did you get that from? Would it be available in blue with white piping perhaps?

Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing your shampoo and conditioner love. I have thick, coarse hair and have always struggled with finding the right duo for my hair. I’m on day two of no wash and my hair feels and still smells amazing!
