It’s football season, so what to make… CHILI! I love this recipe that my mother-in-law shared with me because it’s easy, delicious and the kids love it. It’s a perfect meal not only for football but it also our go to during busy fall & winter months when the kids have later dance nights and we need something that can be simmering at home.Jump to Recipe
The first step is to chop the onion. Recently my husband got me a high end knife set from Wüsthof and I love how the knives make chopping almost enjoyable. He got the 15 piece set but it comes in several piece options.
I also got this cutting board last Christmas that has a pop out and removable handy tray that hangs over the counter’s edge to catch food scraps and juices. While I love the design and function it’s the story of the New York City firefighter dad that lost his life to cancer and his children’s mission to bring his invention to market that made me want to buy them for everyone!
Now it’s time to brown the meat. I typically use a fairly lean ground beef but I’ve also done this recipe with half beef and half turkey when I wanted to cut calories and it tastes great both ways.
If you haven’t yet picked up this nifty meat chopper, do it!! It makes this step so much faster and I feel like the meat ends up in more uniform pieces. I use my Always Pan that is non stick and lightweight because after the meat is browned it’s easy to lift and pour out any excess grease.
At this point it’s dumping time. Add the chopped onions, 2 lbs of cooked ground meat, 1 can of Bush’s Bourbon and Brown Sugar Grillin’ Beans, spices, 1 can of tomato paste and 4 quarts water to your slow cooker. Set to low and let cook for 4-6 hours.
If you make in the morning it will be perfect for evening games!
In our household there is a bit of a fight on how this chili is best served. My husband think over egg noddles and to me that’s just weird. Only Frito scoops and freshly grated cheddar cheese in my books. This cute football serving bowls make it fun for the kids to serve themselves for toppings.
Don’t call a foul if your chili is not finished the day you make it because it’s an amazing dish to FREEZE!! I put my leftovers in these fun Souper Cubes that allow for exact 2 cup freezing then pop it out of the molds and into your freezer bag. Label and you have a great lunch or dinner ready to go!
These even come in 1 cup cubes for smaller batch items as well.

Football Crockpot Chili
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 1 medium onion chopped
- 1 can tomato paste
- 1 can Bush's Grillin Beans Bourbon & Brown Sugar
- 1 quart water
- 3 tbsp chili powder
- 1 1/2 tbsp ground cumin
- Brown meat and pour off grease
- add all ingredients including cooked meat into cock pot and stir
- cook low 4-6 hours
- Serve with Fritos & cheese for perfect Super Bowl meal!
